Sunnyhills Midweek Ladies

The Sunnyhills Tennis Club (SHTC) has a very strong Midweek Ladies program at the club which includes social as well as competitive play, fundraising and activities throughout the year.

Our social day is on a Wednesday morning where ladies are mixed into doubles teams and play matches that encompass a wide range of ages as well as abilities, followed by a morning tea.  The relaxed and friendly atmosphere encourages new members and beginning players to join in and “have a go” which we believe has increased the membership of the SHTC Midweek Ladies this season.  We utilise a roster system whereby on their given day a member is responsible for making up the games, setting up the morning tea and hosting duties.

For those ladies who enjoy competitive play we offer Interclub year-round.  Currently SHTC has 4 Tuesday teams entered into the 2022 Tennis Auckland Lead-In Competition.  SHTC also participates in the Winter Outdoor Competition and had 4 teams playing in 2022 with matches played in Terms 2 & 3 while many of our players also enter teams into the Winter Indoor Competition at Scarbro Tennis Centre so there’s something for every level of play.

SHTC Midweek Ladies hold their annual Club Champs for Doubles and Singles, encouraging both Interclub and Social players to enter a team in a competitive format.  Trophies and certificates are handed out at our annual AGM/Prizegiving along with the Most Improved Player Award and Committee Member of the Year Award.

Throughout the year the Midweek Ladies also host a number of social and fundraising events including our Private Courts Tournament, Winter Soup Day, Champagne Breakfast Open Day and a Christmas Party.  Numbers for attendees range between 20-45 ladies and we often invite members from other local clubs to join in as well.  At our Winter Soup Day we ask members to bring in non-perishable items which are then donated to the Food Bank in Howick and at our annual Christmas party in lieu of a gift exchange the members bring new, unwrapped children’s toys that are donated to the Salvation Army in Howick.   SHTC Midweek Ladies is also home to an entertainment troupe that has been performing skits and songs at our Christmas party for the past 28 years and is definitely the highlight of the festive season.

Funds raised from our activities have been used to provide subsidised coaching sessions for new/returning players in order to keep membership steady and to offer sporting opportunity to ladies in the community who may not have played tennis before.
